What can cause ankle pain?
Different ankle conditions can cause similar symptoms. Where the pain occurs, how it started and whether you have swelling or instability help guide the assessment.

How is ankle pain assessed?
Your appointment begins with a discussion of your symptoms, previous injuries, activities and medical history. The examination may include checking movement, tenderness, swelling and how comfortably you can put weight through the ankle.
Ultrasound may be useful for examining certain tendons, ligaments and other soft tissues. Some problems require different investigations, such as an X-ray for suspected bone or joint changes. Your clinician will explain whether imaging is needed.
