Nerve Blocks (NOT Spinal)

At RAD Clinics, we specialise in therapeutic nerve blocks, a treatment option that targets specific nerves to relieve pain, improve function, and reduce symptoms associated with various neurological conditions. These blocks can be used for conditions that involve nerve irritation, compression, or entrapment. By precisely injecting medication near the affected nerve, we aim to interrupt pain signals, providing lasting relief and improved quality of life.

Mode of Action of Nerve Blocks

Therapeutic nerve blocks work by interrupting pain signals between the affected nerve and the brain, providing immediate relief from nerve-related conditions. The medication reduces swelling around the nerve, allowing it to heal and preventing further pain transmission. Additionally, nerve blocks can improve function by easing muscle spasms and enabling patients to engage in physical therapy or daily activities.

Procedure of Nerve Blocks

  • Preparation: The area around the target nerve is cleaned, and a local anaesthetic may be applied to minimise any discomfort during the procedure.
  • Ultrasound Guidance: Using advanced ultrasound imaging, a fine needle is carefully guided to the precise location of the nerve, ensuring accuracy and safety.
  • Injection: A small amount of anaesthetic, often combined with a corticosteroid, is injected around the targeted nerve to block pain and reduce inflammation.
  • Monitoring: After the injection, the patient is closely monitored for a short period to assess the initial response to the treatment and to ensure there are no immediate adverse effects.

Ultrasound-Guided Nerve Blocks

By using ultrasound, the procedure is highly accurate, reducing the risk of complications and ensuring that the medication is delivered precisely to the source of pain. This technique helps to alleviate symptoms such as inflammation, nerve compression, and chronic pain, providing fast and targeted relief while minimising patient discomfort.

Nerve Blocks for Common Nerve Pain Conditions

Nerve blocks can be used for a variety of pain-related conditions, including:

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Nerve Block

A carpal tunnel nerve block targets the median nerve at the wrist to reduce pain and inflammation associated with carpal tunnel syndrome. It provides relief from symptoms like numbness and tingling in the hand.

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome Nerve Block

For cubital tunnel syndrome, a nerve block around the ulnar nerve at the elbow helps alleviate pain, tingling, and weakness in the forearm and hand caused by nerve compression.

Tarsal Tunnel Block

A tarsal tunnel nerve block is injected around the posterior tibial nerve at the ankle to relieve pain and numbness from tarsal tunnel syndrome, a condition involving nerve compression.

Pudendal Nerve Block

A pudendal nerve block targets the pudendal nerve in the pelvic area, helping to reduce pain from conditions like pudendal neuralgia, providing relief from pelvic and genital discomfort.

Suprascapular Nerve Block

For shoulder pain, a suprascapular nerve block targets the suprascapular nerve to provide relief from conditions like rotator cuff injuries and impingement syndrome.

Lateral Femoral Cutaneous Nerve Block

lateral femoral cutaneous nerve block targets the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, providing relief from meralgia paraesthetica, a condition that causes thigh pain and burning sensations.

Genicular Nerve Block

A genicular nerve block is used to treat knee pain, targeting the genicular nerves to reduce pain from conditions like osteoarthritis and post-surgical knee pain.

Baxter’s Nerve Block

A Baxter’s nerve block targets the first branch of the lateral plantar nerve to treat heel pain caused by Baxter’s nerve entrapment.

Morton’s Neuroma Block

A Morton’s neuroma block targets the nerves between the toes, providing pain relief for Morton’s neuroma, which causes burning, tingling, and sharp foot pain.

Benefits of Nerve Blocks

  • Targeted Pain Relief: Nerve blocks specifically target the affected nerve, providing focused pain management.
  • Minimally Invasive: The procedure is non-surgical and involves only a small needle injection.
  • Quick Procedure: Nerve blocks are typically performed quickly, with minimal downtime for the patient.
  • Diagnostic Tool: Nerve blocks can help identify the source of pain, aiding in the diagnosis of chronic pain conditions.
  • Improved Mobility: By reducing pain, patients may experience improved movement and functionality in the affected area.
