What is an Upper Abdomen & Pelvis Scan?
This is a non-invasive ultrasound procedure designed to assess the abdominal organs, such as the liver, gallbladder, kidneys, and pancreas, alongside the reproductive organs in the pelvis, including the uterus and ovaries. Combining these scans offers a broader diagnostic scope, providing insights into both abdominal and gynaecological health in a single session.

Conditions Diagnosed
Upper Abdomen
This scan can diagnose a variety of abdominal conditions, including:
Gallstones
Hard deposits that form in the gallbladder, causing pain and potential blockages in bile ducts.
Kidney Stones
Solid mineral deposits in the kidneys that can cause severe pain and obstruct urine flow.
Liver Disease
Includes conditions like fatty liver, cirrhosis, or liver inflammation, affecting liver function and overall health.
Pancreatitis
Inflammation of the pancreas, leading to severe abdominal pain and digestive issues.
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
A bulging or weakening of the abdominal aorta, which can be life-threatening if it ruptures.
Tumours and Masses
Ultrasound can detect abnormal growths or masses in the liver, pancreas, kidneys, or other abdominal organs.
Ascites
The buildup of fluid in the abdomen, often associated with liver disease or cancer.
Pelvis
The pelvic component is invaluable for diagnosing conditions such as:
Ovarian Cysts:
Fluid-filled sacs in or on the ovaries.
Fibroids:
Non-cancerous growths in the uterus.
Endometriosis:
Tissue similar to the uterine lining growing outside the uterus.
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID):
Infections affecting the reproductive organs.
Abnormal Uterine Bleeding:
Assessing the uterine lining and identifying potential causes.
Preparing for the Scan
Preparation for Upper Abdomen Scan
- Fasting: Refrain from eating or drinking anything other than water for 6 to 8 hours before the scan. This helps keep the gallbladder distended and reduces gas in the stomach and intestines for clearer imaging.
- Diabetic Patients: If you have diabetes, please inform our team in advance to schedule a suitable appointment time.
- Clothing: Wear loose, comfortable clothing. You may be asked to change into a gown for the scan.
Preparation for Pelvis Scan
- Full Bladder: Drink at least 1 litre of water 1 hour before the appointment and avoid emptying your bladder. A full bladder enhances the clarity of images by acting as an acoustic window for the pelvic structures.
- Comfortable Attire: Wear easily removable clothing to simplify preparation for the scan.
