WOMEN'S HEALTH Scans

At RAD Clinics, we specialise in women’s health scans, offering comprehensive and advanced imaging services that cater to a range of gynaecological needs. One of the key scans we provide is the women’s health scan, commonly referred to as a pelvic scan. A female pelvis ultrasound scan is designed to examine a woman’s pelvic organs in detail, including the uterusovaries, cervix, and bladder

A female pelvis scan is normally a two-part scan as below:

WHAT IS A TRANSABDOMINAL SCAN?

Transabdominal Scan involves the use of high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the pelvic organs. The scan is performed by applying a small amount of gel to the lower abdomen, followed by moving a handheld device called a transducer across the skin. The sound waves emitted by the transducer bounce off the organs and tissues, producing images that are displayed on a monitor in real time.

This type of ultrasound is highly beneficial for evaluating both acute and chronic conditions in the pelvic region. It is non-invasive, radiation-free, and provides a quick way to obtain diagnostic information.

WHAT IS A TRANSVAGINAL SCAN?

Transvaginal Scan, also referred to as an internal ultrasound, is a type of imaging test where a small probe is inserted into the vagina to create detailed images of the female pelvic organs.

At RAD Clinics, this scan is performed by skilled healthcare professionals using state-of-the-art ultrasound technology, ensuring that patients receive accurate results with minimal discomfort.

CONDITIONS DIAGNOSED WITH A FEMALE PELVIC SCAN

A  private pelvic ultrasound scan can be used to diagnose several medical conditions affecting the reproductive system. Some of the key conditions diagnosed at RAD Clinics include:

Uterine Fibroids

Benign tumours that develop in the uterus and can cause pain, heavy bleeding, or fertility issues.

Ovarian Cysts

Fluid-filled sacs on the ovaries that can lead to discomfort, irregular periods, or complications if they rupture.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)

An infection that affects the female reproductive organs, often resulting from sexually transmitted infections.

Uterine or Endometrial Polyps

Small growths that develop in the lining of the uterus, potentially causing abnormal bleeding.

Pelvic Masses

Any abnormal growths or tumours that develop in the pelvic region, including cancerous and non-cancerous conditions.

Adenomyosis

A condition where the inner lining of the uterus breaks through the muscle wall, causing pain and heavy menstrual bleeding.

PREPARING FOR A FEMALE PELVIS SCAN

Preparation for a female pelvis scan is simple but crucial for obtaining clear and accurate images. Here are the key steps to follow before your appointment at RAD Clinics:

  1. Drink Plenty of Water: You will be asked to have a full bladder before the scan. This usually involves drinking 1 to 1.5 litres of water about an hour before your appointment. A full bladder helps to push the intestines out of the way, providing a better view of the pelvic organs.
  2. Wear Comfortable Clothing: While the procedure is non-invasive, wearing loose and comfortable clothing makes it easier for you to prepare for the scan. You may also be asked to change into a gown for the procedure.
  3. Arrive on Time: Being punctual for your appointment helps ensure that the scan is performed at the right time, especially since a full bladder is needed. Arriving late may result in discomfort from holding a full bladder for too long.

At RAD Clinics, our team ensures that you are well-prepared and comfortable throughout the process.

THE FEMALE PELVIS SCAN PROCEDURE

The procedure is straightforward and usually takes about 30-45 minutes to complete. You will lie down on a bed, and a clear gel will be applied to your lower abdomen. The gel helps the transducer glide smoothly over the skin and improves the clarity of the images by eliminating air pockets between the transducer and your skin.

The clinician will move the transducer over your lower abdomen, capturing various images of your pelvic organs. You might feel slight pressure, especially if your bladder is full, but the procedure is generally painless. Once the scan is complete, the gel will be wiped off, and you can empty your bladder before undertaking the second part of the examination, which is a transvaginal scan.

During the transvaginal scan, you are expected to lie on an examination table with your feet in stirrups, like a gynaecological exam. The clinician will insert a transducer probe, which is designed to fit comfortably within the vaginal canal. As the probe transmits sound waves, the images of your pelvic organs are projected onto a screen.

BENEFITS OF A FEMALE PELVIS SCAN

female pelvis scan offers numerous benefits, making it a preferred diagnostic tool for many conditions. Some of the key benefits include:

  • Accurate Diagnosis: It provides clear and detailed images of the pelvic organs, allowing for accurate diagnoses of various conditions.
  • Quick and Painless: The procedure is relatively quick, taking about 20-30 minutes, and is completely painless, with no downtime required afterward.
  • Real-Time Imaging: The scan captures real-time images, which can be useful in observing blood flow, organ movement, and other important factors that help in diagnosis.
